A dental crown is one of the most commonly placed dental restorations. In fact, thousands of people get dental crowns every day to fix damaged teeth. Of course, if this is your first dental crown then you may have questions about this restoration and how it can help your smile. Our Fowlerville, MI, family dentists want you to fully understand any dental treatment beforehand so you know exactly what to expect.

What is a dental crown?

Before you understand what a crown can do it’s important to understand what it is, first. A crown is a hollow, tooth-shaped restoration that is designed to cover the entire visible part of a tooth. It will fit over the tooth all the way to the gum line, where it will then be cemented into place. Once cemented into place, the dental crown will become your tooth’s new outer layer.

Why do I need a dental crown?

There are many reasons why our Fowlerville, MI, dentist may recommend that you get a dental crown. After all, this versatile restoration can serve several purposes. For one, a crown may be placed when a dental filling is too large and can no longer fully support a tooth. A crown may also be used to protect and restore a broken or cracked tooth because it will completely cover the tooth to prevent further damage.

Crowns also offer cosmetic advantages, too. Along with protecting a tooth and strengthening it, a crown can also improve the overall shape, size, and color of a tooth. If you are dealing with a tooth that has significant stains and discolorations, a crown can make the tooth whiter.

Crowns are also used to treat tooth loss. If you are getting a dental implant to replace a single tooth, then a crown will be cemented over the implant to restore your smile. Crowns can also be used to support dental bridges.

How are dental crowns placed?

Before placing a crown, our dentist will need to treat the problem first. This means, numbing the area around the tooth with anesthetic and then drilling away any damaged areas of the tooth. We will also need to reshape the tooth so that the crown can fit over it. After the tooth is prepped we will also take impressions of the tooth, which will be sent to a dental lab so they can make your crown.

It can take a couple weeks to get your final crown back from the lab. During that time, we will place a temporary crown over the tooth to protect it. When you come back into the office, we will remove the temporary crown and check the fit of the permanent one to make sure it’s just right before cementing it into place.
